Lost.Mindd, also known as Julia, is a trailblazing music producer from Sweden whose genres span from Indie Rock, Singer-Songwriter, and Pop to Lofi. Julia, who has several million streams across her songs, graciously opened up about her creative process, artistic evolution, industry navigation as a female producer, and her future projects.
Can you walk us through your creative process when it comes to writing and producing music? Do you have any rituals or specific methods that you follow?
"When I start on a song or a project I try to have some sense of where I want it to go sonically, otherwise I tend to get lost in the endless possibilities of where I can go with it. I also need to be relaxed and not try to force anything. So not too many rituals for creating a song, although for me it’s important to know when to scrap a song. I know a lot of the advice floating around is to finish every song you start, but I can’t really do that. If I’m not inspired by what I’m creating it feels forced. So it’s better to take a break, come back inspired, and start on something new."
How do you feel your music has evolved since you first started creating? Are there any significant changes or themes that have emerged along your artistic journey?
"I think I have become more confident with how my music sounds over time. In the beginning, it was more about creating what I thought people wanted to hear, and that often translated into me feeling uninspired or burnt out when it came down to it. I 100% believe that people can hear in the music that it came from a place of excitement and inspiration, so that’s my guiding principle to make music. I only produce the songs that I want to make and that makes me feel that excitement. Also through hours and hours of practice, I have found a sound that I’m happy with, and I know which genres make me feel the most inspired so I try to stick to those to avoid any sense of burnout these days."
Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations and influences and how do they shape your sound and approach to creating music? Additionally, as a female producer, how do you navigate and find your place within the music industry?
"I always get super inspired by discovering new music or a new artist. It motivates me to try something different, learn how to do something even better or try a different technique when producing.
It will always be harder to find your place as a female producer within the music industry, no matter how much you accomplish it always feels like you are on the outside looking in. So many of your male peers get opportunities thrown at them while I have to prove myself everyday that I’m qualified to be here. It sounds discouraging, and some days it is a bit overwhelming, but the trick for me is to just keep my eyes on my own progress and try and find other female and NB artists and producers to work with and to support. But also to try and do as much good as I possibly can in this industry to help others."
How have your collaborations influenced your music?
"I think collaborations are super important. We learn so much from working together with other people and usually the end result is amazing. I also think it’s a great way to compliment each other's sounds, what I’m not good at, someone else might be good at and there is no shame in admitting that and letting the other person do that part of the song. So my music is absolutely better because of the people I work with."
What projects are you currently working on, and what are you looking forward to this year?
"I’m currently working a lot on my lofi music, including finding the time to work with new artists and reconnect with old collaborators. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow the Lofi Stories label. I launched it last year with my good friend David and it has been such an amazing and successful journey so far. We want to keep working on our goal to help artists release music, finding bigger platforms and educating them on this industry. This year there will be even more opportunities for more untold stories to be heard.
I’m also looking forward to getting back to producing for artists much more this year. That was something I unfortunately didn’t have put much time on last year, and I love producing for a specific artist or project so much so I definitely need to prioritize that!"
As Julia embarks on new musical ventures and continues to nurture the growth of Lofi Stories label, we eagerly anticipate her next release!
